Meigs County was established in 1819 and has remained basically unchanged in some aspects. Meigs County's people have that good-hearted, down-home, country hospitality. The land is still farmed in much of the county, and the Ohio River still provides transportation and entertainment.

Historical figures have landmarks all over the county including George Washington's stay during his surveying years and Morgan's Raiders historical horse ride.

The Battle of Buffington Island was Ohio's only battle in the American Civil War. Re-inactments take place honoring this historic battle.

The first court house was built in 1822 in Chester and is the oldest court house in the state of Ohio.

The present court house was completed in 1850 with three ground floor entrances, featured on Ripley's Believe It or Not!
